Drusy literally means “covered by a large number of minute crystals”. The term
Drusy is used in the jewelry industry to mean a gem that has this specific type
of gem formation. It is often found referred to as druzy, druse, or druzie.
Drusy gemstones are cabochons with natural surface texture like fine sugar
crystals that sparkle like freshly fallen snow. Drusy is formed when ground
water carrying dissolved silica is forced into a porous area of the rock, rapid
cooling often occurs, causing the formation of tiny crystals on the surfaces or
in cavities of the rock. The clear crystals often form on top of previously
deposited minerals.
Types of Drusy: Some of the minerals found in this form are
microcrystalline aggregates known as Agates (many natural & dyed colors),
Chrysocolla (Blues/Greens), Malachite (Green), Hematite (Rainbow Colors),
Psilomelane (Black), Uvarovite (Green Garnet), Rainbow Pyrite, Carnelian and
Cobalto Calcite (Pink).
Titanium Drusy is created using a high tech process on a natural piece of
Drusy. That process is called "vapor deposition". Inside a vacuum chamber the
metal titanium is vaporized, then mixed with oxygen and it then descends onto
the Drusy crystals and bonds with the crystals' surface at a molecular level. It
produces a metallic coating in spectacular shades of bright and deep blues, lush
purples, brilliant greens that shimmer and change in a scintillating fashion.
Some Green & Pink, Brown & Blue Agate Drusy are coated with Silicone Dioxide
producing a beautiful and feminine pink or blue shading that is also created by
using the vapor deposition process. Some agates are dyed to achieve their
vibrant coloring.
Care of vapor coated drusy: This coating is permanent and
looks terrific, but keep in mind that it is thin. Clean by swirling through
soapy water, rinse in distilled water, and blow-dry. Coating on drusy crystals
will be fine as long as it is not abraded. Not intended for use in rings.
